Cyprus officials caught helping criminals get EU citizenship

An undercover investigation by Al Jazeera has exposed high-ranking officials in Cyprus expressing a willingness to help convicted criminals obtain EU citizenship.
In August, Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit released The Cyprus Papers, which revealed serious flaws in the country’s citizen-by-investment programme.
Now, as Al Jazeera’s Phil Rees reports, the investigation leads to the highest offices in the Cypriot state.

  1. "country’s citizen-by-investment programme" – the scheme itself is a clever one for the country's prosperity. The operators behind are the ones bringing ill repute to it. Remove the rotten apples in the barrel and the rest will be fine – in this case, the country.

  2. I knew it was true when every news channel was dismissing and denouncing Anjazeera's investigation as fake without even saying they conducted their own investigation. Corrupt to the core

  3. This corruption is the tip of the iceberg. Wealthy individuals pay off police officers to commit crimes against other citizens. The police leadership is aware of the situation but they are doing nothing to prevent it, It appears the police leadership is corrupt.

  4. I must congratulate AlJazeera for the good job because you can not expect such job from Cyprus authorities. I have send 6.5 papers complaints about my Country to human rights and European Committee before 2 years about, without result. WELL DONE GUYS

  5. Thank you Aljazeera for exposing this which is not at all surprising. I hope you stick with this story because you will see that politicians will get away with their actions. The solution is not to stop this program which helped stimulate the economy but to to get rid of the greedy politicians that abuse their power and assisted the wrong people for personal financial gain. The ones who will pay for their actions are the people who will loose their jobs in the construction industry. The politicians have immunity and will not pay the price. They will resign and take their fat pensions with them. Stick with the story if you really want to help us make a change.

  6. Well this is happening everywhere not just Cyprus. Why are you picking on Cyprus. The laundering of money that takes place in UK, Germany, Malta, Portugal… facilitated by big names Deutche Bank , etc

  7. Hahaha! This kind of exploitation if people, is the specialty of turkish nation. They accept all refugees in, they drain every money and fottune they have, and after they ship them in damaged boats, towards Greece, where some of them arrive if they are lucky. It’s not greek’s mentality this think.

  8. Well done Al Jazeera for bringing this up (irrespective of political motives)

Now is the chance for Cyprus & Cypriots to get rid of this scheme for good and wipe the slate clean.

  9. VP and prez wannabe, Biden, openly uses his own son and brother as "bagmen",
blackmails countries to leave them alone, is accused of rape and keeps the evidence locked,
and nobody can touch him. But Cyprus officials did what?! GTFO…..

  10. Sadly this is not news to anybody – the corrupt in Cyprus are not the only people doing this…it exists in Malta, Italy, Portugal, Spain (and other countries too!!)…they are all at it in the EU. Yet another reason why the UK voted to leave the EU, an organisation which was always intended to serve the super-rich and business interests at the expense of the European people.

  11. Citizens should be less tolerant and more ethical from their politicians. Cutting their lurks and perks, plus halving their salaries, with Long custodial sentences on the chain, gang performing public work.

  12. AL JAZEERA ALSO NEWS IS RUNNING BY CRIMINAL THATS WHY BAN IN EGYPT BECAUSE ALL REPORTER DOING RUBBISH AND MAKE THEM SEND TO JAILED WHY DID NOT MAKE SOLVED YOUR OWN PROBLEM ALJAEERA NO CRIDIBILITY AND NO REPUTATION FOR MAKING NEWS I DONT TRUST THIS REPORTER.

  13. Every single passport connected to investment must be fully investigated by the EU. Every office should have been raided to secure documents by now. As I type evidence is being destroyed. Laptops and cellphones are begin dropped into the ocean several miles off the island. The corrupt officials will carry on in their government jobs. The only individuals who will be charged by the Cyprus government are likely the estate agents and the two developer employees. That is if they're not killed first via vehicle or boating "accident". The attorney is also in danger. He knows too much for the government officials to simple leave alone.
